Michael. Irma. Wilma. These are just a few of the hurricanes that have devastated Florida in the past 20 years.

Real Facts About Hurricanes in Florida

Florida is the most hurricane-prone state in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 40% of all hurricanes in the U.S. hit Florida. In fact, in the time since the U.S. began recording hurricane hits in 1851, Florida has been hit by 120 hurricanes.

Hurricane Season
Hurricane Season

Hurricanes season is between June and November. The worst hurricanes often occur between August and September. During these months, homeowners in Florida should have a plan in place in the event of a serious storm.

Severity of hurricanes
Severity of hurricanes

The severity of hurricanes is ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the hurricane’s maximum sustained wind speed. This scale is known as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale:

  • Category 1: Very dangerous winds of 75-95 mph that can do some damage to roofs, shingles, vinyl siding, and gutters. Winds of this intensity can snap large branches of trees and cause extensive damage to power lines. There may be flying debris.

  • Category 2: Extremely dangerous winds of 96-110 mph that can cause serious roof and siding damage. Winds of this intensity can uproot even large trees and cause several days’ worth of power outages. Flooding in low-lying places can occur.

  • Category 3: Winds of 111-129 mph that can cause devastating damage, including major roof and siding damage to well-built homes. Smaller homes, like mobile homes, may be destroyed. Winds of this intensity can result in electricity and water being unavailable for days or even weeks.

  • Category 4: Catastrophically dangerous winds of 130-156 mph that can cause severe structural damage to homes. Power outages after Category 4 storms can last weeks and can make the area uninhabitable for several weeks.

  • Category 5: This category is reserved for the most dangerous of hurricanes, with winds over 157 mph. Hurricanes of this severity can destroy homes and commercial buildings, cause mass flooding, and down trees and powerlines. The affected area could be uninhabitable for weeks or even months and power outages may last for months as well.

Hurricane AccidentsЧасто задаваемые вопросы

A hurricane is coming. How do I prepare for the storm?

It’s very important to be ready for a hurricane, especially if you live in an evacuation zone. Before the storm, take the following steps to protect your family and home:

  • The safety of your family comes first. Pack an emergency kit with water, medicine, and power sources, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fortify your doors and cover your windows with storm shutters or plywood. Remove any items outside of your home that could blow away or hit your home during a gust. Know your evacuation zone and have an evacuation plan in case you need to seek shelter.
  • Take detailed notes about the state of your property before the storm. This includes taking many photos of the interior and exterior of your home, as well as any other structures on the property. This will help prove that any new damage was caused by the storm and it will make it harder for the insurance company to deny your claim.
  • Review your insurance policy to make sure it is active. If you don’t have it already, consider coverage for flood damage. Flood damage is not covered by homeowners insurance.

There are also important steps to take after the storm recedes. Be sure to photograph your property damage and file your insurance claim as soon as possible. Your policy may have specific deadlines for filing claims after a storm, so read your policy carefully. Delaying your claim will only make it easier for the insurance company to deny or underpay your claim.

And if your claim is denied or minimized, call 1-800-HURT-511 to learn what your options are. An attorney may be able to help you recover the full amount you’re owed.

I always pay my homeowners insurance premiums on time. Why is my insurance company denying/undervaluing my claim?

Simply put, insurance companies don’t want to lose money. If you sustain expensive damage to your property due to a hurricane or storm, the insurance company may be very hesitant to pay out your claim in full. They may delay paying out your claim or even deny that your insurance coverage exists at all. In cases like these, a hurricane insurance claim attorney may be able to assist you in recovering the full value of your claim.

How can a hurricane damage lawyer help me?

It is disheartening to hear that your insurance claim is being denied or lowballed after you and your family survived a serious natural disaster. But you don’t have to take the insurance company’s “no” for an answer.

A hurricane property damage attorney can assess the true value of your hurricane claim. Call 1-800-HURT-511 today to speak to a hurricane insurance attorney in Florida about what your claim could be worth. Our lawyers will fight the insurance company on your behalf, so you can focus on what’s important: your family and home.
